Jack H. Skirball Center For The Performing Arts

SoHo, Manhattan · 459 reviews

The evening began inside the packed NYU Skirball auditorium, where Ocean Vuong appeared in conversation with a colleague from NYU's Creative Writing Program to celebrate the release of his new novel, The Emperor of Gladness. The crowd--students, writers, and long-time admirers of On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous--leaned forward from the first minute. Vuong was witty, sexy, and astonishingly quick. His pedagogy, as revealed through his talk, felt like an art of improvisation--how to teach language not as a rule, but as a dance between pain and play. His responses to each prompt were crisp and mischievous, layered with poetry even in casual speech. What could have been a serious literary discussion turned into a lively exchange of glances, jokes, and vulnerabilities--a performance of thinking aloud. He spoke of teaching as "an act of tenderness and rebellion," of how syntax can carry desire and survival, and of how the classroom becomes a kind of poem when everyone listens closely. The moderator matched him in rhythm, teasing out moments of humor and insight; their rapport made the night feel intimate, as if the audience had wandered into a late-night conversation rather than a staged event. After the talk, I lingered in the foyer, where portraits from the exhibition Hot Peaches--drag performers of downtown New York--lined the wall with the defiant quote: "You don't hide beautiful things in closets." It felt like the perfect echo to Vuong's words--beauty, too, must risk being seen. Later, I slipped into a nearby restaurant for a slow supper: baked lasagna bubbling in its ceramic dish, a slice of tiramisu, and a small espresso. The room was dim and tender, the kind of place where conversations turn inward. Between bites, I kept thinking of Vuong's phrase about "returning light to those still finding their own syntax." The meal became an aftertaste of the talk itself--comforting, layered, quietly luminous.

From the check in to the hilarious comedians, it was a 5 star experience! Love having NY Comedy Club in the Upper West Side! The price of drinks was a little out of control- $32 for a double shot of Bullit on the rocks is more than I have paid *anywhere* by far.

I can't resist Casablanca, the movie. So, when it played here on a lovely, pleasant summer evening and my better half's nudging and tempting me with a cocktail in disguise, we went. Delightfully casual experience. Can't believe that I was unaware of the fact that NYC Parks dept.'s 'Movies under the stars' program had the neighborhood bandshell as one of their venues. They also do concerts by local talent here too. Thank you NYC Parks

Really nice feel. Amazing backyard with a fire pit and great seating. Pro tip: go to a deli nearby to get marshmallows for roasting on the fire in the backyard. None of the delis have skewers so get a box of long hollow pasta (you might have to check a couple delis for them). Once you do this everyone at the show you're at will be in love with you. Have fun!

I really like this theatre. Truly no bad seat in the house. Even if you have seats on the Mezzanine you are literally right on top of the action. There is plenty of space between you and the next row. I had the opportunity to be in both the mezzanine and orchestra and I enjoyed the show perfectly. The acoustics are really good. Great place to catch a show.

Fun place to do a lot. I come mostly for films but I've also heard some great music here. Nice staff, drinks of all kinds available, and good vibes in the crowd. Impressed with the kinds of stuff they curate. I recently saw a showing of three rare James Baldwin films and was blown away. BAM is the best of Brooklyn.

Stopped by for a performance of Invisible / Visible by ZCODP and Deaf Music Ensemble and was happy to have discovered the space. They offer a free or low cost venue that allows so many different emerging performing arts groups to showcase their creativity. Only bit of feedback I have is clearer directions to get to the theater for those with accessibility needs (instead of the main staircase). I'm a wheelchair user who was attending a show all about inclusivity and still had issues navigating but thankfully figured it out.

I went to only the auditorium for a Jamaican Film Festival function. Still, I was very impressed by the size and layout of the auditorium and access to the campus. I took public transportation and it was safe short walk from the 2 train Chambers St station. I believe adequate parking is onsite and some street parking, but have no idea how easy or congested it is to access. Also bear in mind it is in the Manhattan, NYC congestion zone, so extra $9 toll charge to enter zone by personal car.

It was such a great feeling to be performing at the theater I grew up watching movies in. The theater is just beautiful and the staff there are amazing as well. We performed there on 8/30/25. We are the Soul Jam Revue. The venue is full of that same charm that was there back in the 60's, 70's and on. I walked around taking in the movie shadows boxes (micky mouse) and this brought back so many memories! The seating there is all brand new, comfortable and spacious! I highly recommend getting there for a show in the future. I can't wait to see when they put up the new marquee!

I run a discussion group and had the pleasure of hosting my Sad Rich Girl Salon here. It was a spacious venue, great for a large group (up to 68 people). I met with Lan a couple months before my event and she was very communicative over Instagram DM, sharing instructions and letting me know how to coordinate with her to promote my event. She requires a flyer with a QR code (easy to make on Canva) and the invitation is hosted on Partiful (you may NOT use eventbrite). There was a 10 person minimum ($20/ticket) that I had to commit to but luckily I sold well beyond this number of tickets. If you want to earn anything from your event, you would charge that on top of the $20 fee that goes to pinkFROG. There was also a 1 item purchase (minimum) for all of my attendees so if you're hosting make sure to let your guests know beforehand. They will have to 1) show proof of purchase for ticket (on Venmo) and 2) before they are allowed to sit down, they must also purchase something from the menu. The check-in system is not super fluid so I recommend giving your start time some buffer (at least 30 min). Otherwise it's distracting when you're on stage trying to run the event and there is a check-in dialogue every time a new person arrives. Staff was very helpful with mics and lights and a great time was had by all.

We came to see a play named DEAR JOHN. Writer & performer is RACHEL LIN. It was based on Rachel's real life. It was very engagimg and we truly enjoyed the play. The staff of the HERE Arts Center was very nice and friendly. The show was downstair in the Dorothy B. Williams Theater. It is small and cozy - about 70 seats - so you felt like you were actually in "the same room" with the actor. The stage has state-of-the-art lighting and sound system. We were quite entertained. These small performance centers are truly the rare gems of NYC. We are lookimg forward to the next show.

Great improv space! The venue has plenty of character and is well-organized. Got a chance to see The GoldenHour crew at UCB Maude Night on 4/20! Amazing sketches ranging from playful to thought-provoking but all well-written and well-performed. Everyone was great but I have to shout out one actress/performer that I thought was a standout in her own right. Great job NaTonia! We had the most magical experience celebrating our daughter's 7th birthday at Galli Theater. From the moment we arrived, everything was thoughtfully organized and beautifully done. The Snow White performance was engaging, creative, and truly captivated all the children. The entire celebration felt special--from the show itself to how smoothly the party was hosted afterward. Both the kids and parents had such a wonderful time, and many guests commented on how unique and well run the event was. Thank you to the incredibly kind and talented team and actors at Galli especially Barbara for making her birthday so memorable. I don't know about the school, but I do know that the performers at Ballet Hispanico are extraordinary. Not sure when this happened because it didn't used to be the case. We saw Ballet Hispanico's Carmen.maquia at City Center and were blown away by the technical brilliance of the dancers, backed by passion and rage. The stark whiteness of the costumes and setting can be unnerving but the perfection of the dance makes the whiteness bearable. So happy to have this superb dance company in New York--and, amazingly enough, on the UWS.

I am an Oberlin College graduate class of 1992. I am a traditional Irish folk music performer. I have performed at many venues in New York and Boston. I have worked as a librarian and teacher for most of my life. I consider myself educated. I am an avid reader, and my parents were serious actors in their early lives. My father and mother performed plays by iShakespeare and studied with Stella Adler. I would not recommend this venue. I was invited by a friend, knew nothing about their policy. I came all the way from Flushing NY. I was 5-10 minutes late and I was not permitted to enter even by the producer. I had called and spoken to her on the phone before I arrived. All over the MTA people are jumping over turnstiles, smoking whatever, lying down on seats, dancers, and artist routinely throw all of their clothing on the floor at studios and schools etc. People routinely show up to performances, church etc. 30 to 40 minutes late, and no were is anyone held accountable these days.... Except at the Performing Garage in New York under all circumstances. What I heard coming out of the performance was pretty odd and the energy was off. I would not support this venue. I was one person late not 5-10. Sincerely, Christian Leale
